A sisal
rug is made from the fibers of the 'agave sisalana' cactus
plant -- But why have natural fiber rugs become so popular?
A sisal rug or mat is made from threads spun from the extracted
fibers of the 'agave sisalana' cactus plant, also known as
the century pant, american aloe, sosquil or green gold. This
natural plant grows throughout the tropical regions of the
world, with Africa and Brazil being it's major producers.
When choosing natural fiber rugs, such as sisal or jute rugs,
for your home, you need to remember that the threads and fibers
used in their manufacture are not naturally waterproof and
therefore easily stained. To minimize this risk of damage,
avoid placing this type of rug or mat in a room that has a
high moisture content, such as a bathroom, kitchen, or one
that is prone to frequent spills or other staining hazards,
such as a child's bedroom.
One of the main reasons that these natural fiber sisal rugs
have become so popular in recent times, is due to the current
fashion in interior design favoring the use of contemporary
rugs such as these. They are also considered an environmentally
friendly option, with many rugs being made from 100% natural
threads and dyes. Finally, these natural fiber modern rugs
are generally cheaper to purchase than many of the more traditionally
produced rugs, whilst the natural fibers and threads are extremely
durable when the rug or mat is used in the correct way.
