Rag rugs
have been popular for many years -- But where did this style
of braided rugs originate from ?
Rag rugs are
braided rugs which have been made from scraps of old fabric.
This fabric is torn into thin strips and these strips are then
braided together to form a braid. Finally, this braid is sewn
together to form the required shape, with oval rugs being a
very popular choice. Over the years rag rugs made in this way
have allowed poorer families to make their own braided rugs,
using nothing more than old clothes and blankets as the raw
materials.
The history of rag rugs is fairly uncertain, although it
is now generally accepted that the construction of braided
rugs using rug braiding techniques was first introduced to
North America by new immigrants from Europe and beyond. These
rugs quickly became popular with women on the frontier who
found they could produce rugs on a tight budget.
Today, making your own rag rugs has become a popular pastime,
with many websites explaining all you need to know. If you
would rather not make your own braided rugs then take a look
at the huge selection of ready made rugs available online.
