Prayer rugs
are widely used by Muslims during prayer -- But why are these
small area rugs used ?
Prayer rugs
are the small area rugs used by Muslims during prayers. They
are normally laid out on the floor to create the clean area
required by Islam for worship. The use of prayer rugs is not
actually required by Islam, but these small area rugs allow
many Muslims to easily find a clean and isolated space in which
they can pray.
Most prayer rugs are around one meter long which is all that
is required to accommodate an adult when kneeling or prostrating.
These special kind of area rugs are usually made from silk
or cotton and have the appearance of a small oriental or persian
throw rug. They are normally adorned with interesting designs
and colors which range from geometric and floral patterns
to depictions of Islamic landmarks.
During use a prayer rug is unrolled and laid on the ground
so that its top edge points towards Mecca in Saudi Arabia.
Once prayer is finished the rug is rolled back up and stored
ready for it's next use, thus ensuring this special area rug
remains clean.
