Persian
prayer rugs have evolved from small embroidered area rugs
-- But where did this happen?
Persian prayer rugs have evolved from small embroidered area
rugs, first made predominantly in the Persian town of Ispahan,
around 200 years ago. At one end of each persian prayer rugs,
which resembled a small oriental throw rug, was an embroidered
mark showing the direction of Mecca. This was probably the
most important feature of this special kind of area rug, as
it enabled each worshiper to easily align the rug with Mecca
during prayer.
At one time these persian prayer rugs were made by persian
women that exclusively produced this type of small persian
rug, however, as time passed by, the demand for these special
area rugs increased, until eventually they began to be manufactured
for the mass market.
Today, persian prayer rug imitations are widely available
online, at one of the many specialist retailers. Invest some
time comparing the various merchants catalogs, and you are
sure to find one of these special area rugs to suit your needs.
