Penny rugs
were first made in New England back in the 19th century --
But do you know how they were made ?
Penny rugs are
a name given to a form of rug making that first began in New
England in the 19th century. They were not made for use on the
floor but rather as decorative table rugs. They were traditionally
made from felted wool, although often scraps of other fabric
were used. To produce a smooth curve, coins were often used
as a template and this is where the term Penny rugs comes from.
This form of rug making is still extremely popular today with
numerous web sites offering instructional advice, penny rug
patterns, and fabric.
Penny rugs are generally constructed by applying ornate cut
out shapes to a backing cloth of felted wool. These shapes
are normally attached to the rug using a blanket stitch. Back
in the 19th century this form of rug making allowed poorer
families to produce some very attractive and more importantly
cheap rugs.
These days you have the choice of making your own penny rugs
using the age old rug making techniques or buying a ready
made rug from one of the many online retailers. If you choose
to make your own be sure to keep a lookout for some of the
fantastic free penny rug patterns that are available.
