Mohawk rugs
are a famous name in area rugs -- But where did they start
?
Mohawk rugs, the world famous range of area rugs, are produced
by Mohawk home (a division of Mohawk industries) and specialize
in manufacturing products for the home retail market. Mohawk
rugs are available under many brand names, but perhaps one
of the best known is the Karastan range of area rugs.
Mohawk industries, the company behind the mohawk rug range
of area rugs, began trading in 1878 when four Shuttleworth
brothers purchased 14 used hand looms from Europe, They set
up their first factory in Amsterdam, New York and by 1908
the company had grown to five buildings and had also launched
a new carpet, the Karnak. This new carpet was such a success
that a new building had to be built the following year to
cope with the increased demand.
In 1920, the Shuttleworth brothers company merged with McCleary,
Wallin and Crouse to form Mohawk Carpet Mills Inc. A new mohawk
rug was introduced that used the newly developed "wash"
axminster process. This gave a newly manufactured area rug
the appearance of an antique oriental rug.
Today, Mohawk industries produce a diverse range of products
including mohawk rugs (area rugs, accent rugs, bath rugs and
mats), carpet, hardwood flooring, laminate flooring and most
recently, ceramic floor tiling. They are now Americas second
largest broadloom manufacturer.
