Making latch
hook rugs is a popular hobby -- But how is this rug weaving
done ?
Latch hook rugs are made using a special rug weaving process
that involves knotting short pieces of yarn onto a canvas.
This is achieved using a purpose built hook that has a small
latch attached to it. The pattern for the latch hook rug can
be either printed onto the backing canvass, or as a separate
graphed pattern. Both types of rug hooking pattern are widely
available online. Whichever pattern type you choose the principle
techniques used in this type of rug weaving are the same.
You simply work your way along the canvass, line by line,
knotting the correct color of yarn, thread by thread, until
the complete rug is finished.
When the latch hook rug is at the end of the rug weaving
process the edges and back need to be finished off. Your rug
is then ready for use. For most people it is the joy of the
rug making process itself which attracts them to this popular
hobby, although at the end of a project you get the bonus
of a useful floor rug, wall hanging, furniture throw or even
a pillow that you have the satisfaction of knowing you made
yourself. The best way to get started with this hobby is to
buy a latch hook rug kit. There are many useful sites online,
each one giving instructional advice as well as offering a
large range or useful supplies.
To clean your finished latch hook rug just give it an occasional
vacuum. If you chose wool pile for your rug weaving, this
naturally repels the dirt, and should be all that is required,
but if a really good clean is required then take it to the
professional cleaners.
