Hooked rugs
have been made for hundreds of years -- But is this style
of rug making for you ?
Hooked rugs
have been made for hundreds of years but their exact origin
is uncertain. Some people believe this style of rug making first
appeared in china, egypt or europe, however, an increasingly
popular view is that hooked rugs were first made on the north
east coast of america, where rug making was used as a cheap
way to cover cold bare floors.
Hooked rugs are made using a hand hook, which is similar
to a crochet hook. This hook is used to create a looped pile
from yarn or fabric strips on an evenly woven base fabric.
It is important to note that this form of rug making is not
the same as that used to make latch hook rugs.
Many of todays hooked rugs are made by hobbyists who enjoy
this type of rug making, with some using rug hooking kits
to make the process easier. For the more advanced hobbyist
rug hooking supplies are widely available online with many
offering rug hooking patterns and more advanced hooked rug
kits.
