Area rugs / accent rugs add color and style to any room - - But how do you choose the perfect rug for you ?

Area rugs come in many shapes and sizes and are sometimes known as accent rugs. I like to think of accent rugs as area rugs with style. Whatever you choose to call them the following simple tips will help you choose the perfect rug every time.

The sizes of area rugs range from 3 x 5 feet to 12 x 15 feet. They are used mostly as floor rugs but can also be fixed to a wall or placed on a piece of furniture. You can use accent rugs in a room to create the focal point, divide up the space or define the flow of traffic.

Area rugs can be used in any room of your home, although there are some simple rules you should follow. Think carefully about the size of the room and how much of it you want to cover. In a living room it is common to find accent rugs placed under a coffee table. Here, you should ensure that it is large enough to allow people sitting on adjacent sofas to rest their feet on it.

Area rugs come from all corners of the world, with styles and materials from hand made traditional oriental rugs to the most up to date contemporary accent rugs, from wool rugs to sisal rugs. When choosing the best material for your rug consider the environment which it will be used in. Will it face years of heavy feet ? Will it be endlessly soaked by the kids ? Will you want to walk on it with your bare feet?. Generally for floor rugs wool is the best choice with its superior resilience over synthetic materials, however, kitchen rugs need to be stain resistant and so a synthetic rug is often the best choice. For a luxurious addition to any bedroom floor chenille rugs are an excellent choice.

To best protect area rugs / accent rugs from wear, rug pads should always be used. These should ideally be about one inch smaller than the rugs they protect. This will ensure they are not seen.
